Secondary School Committee
MISSION
STATEMENT:
The FWATA Secondary Schools Committee is dedicated to recognizing the concerns and responsibilities associated with the Secondary School setting and to developing programs and activities to enhance the effectiveness of secondary schools athletic trainers.
Fall 2008 Report:
The National Federation of High Schools is funding an expansion of the RIO injury surveillance for high schools to assist them in rules making policies. We are hoping they will make a presentation at the NATA Annual Meeting in San Antonio to explain the program and their potential outcomes.
NATA has partnered with the North American Booster Club Association. This is a national organization who aims to assist high school booster clubs in organization and administrative issues. They feel strongly that one of the goals of booster clubs should be to support schools efforts in funding athletic trainers and medical supplies. District 8’s own Kira Au is on the advisory board.
The SSATC has decided to expand the Jack Cramer Scholarship by including a $500 award for the each of the 10 district finalists. Please encourage your athletic training student aides to apply.
The SSATC with sponsorship from our friends at Gatorade have created a recognition award for an athletic trainer working in the secondary school setting. The intent is to recognize those who are doing outstanding things in their school and school community. The winner in each district will receive a hydration package from Gatorade. Be on the lookout for information on how to apply later this year.
The SSATC has opened a dialogue with NATA for future sponsorship of the National Honor Society of Sports Medicine for High Schools founded by Eli Hallak and Cindy Kramer. This society currently has established 24 chapters in 4 states: California, Washington, Nevada, and now Idaho with several other states who have expressed interest in becoming members (Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, & Arizona). They will be making a presentation at the California Association of Leaders for Career Preparation (CALCP and California Association of Regional Occupations Centers and Programs (CAROCP) annual meeting in Rancho Mirage on November 21, 2008.
NATA State Secondary School Committee has created a Grant Program for State Associations. This grant program is part of a larger program with a goal to ensure that every high school student-athlete has access to quality athletic health care provided by a certified athletic trainer. The grant money is available on an NATA fiscal year basis and applications must be received and the money expended within that NATA fiscal year in order to be funded in that year. NATA’s fiscal year runs April 1 – March 31. The NATA Secondary School Athletic Trainers’ Committee encourages each state association to make use of these funds. Please feel free to contact the NATA staff liaisons to the SSATC, the chair of the SSATC or Cindy Clivio with any questions regarding these grants or other secondary school activities. All states that conduct approved secondary school activities are eligible for a matching Secondary School Committee Grant. Please. For 2008-09, the maximum grant amount is $1,000. To be eligible to receive grant funds, a secondary school committee or similar group must be in place, an annual report submitted and an application submitted. The
application form is available on the NATA Website
